Should You Give The Witchblade RE-rebirth a Shot?

Hey there my comic crusader!

Ok, so ready for me to dish on the 2024 rebirth of Witchblade?

Image Comics and Top Cow dropped Witchblade #1 on July 17 2024 as a glossy 48-page premiere priced at just $4.99, proving that dark magic can still be budget-conscious.

Writer Marguerite Bennett teams with artist Giuseppe Cafaro—with co-creator Marc Silvestri cackling approvingly in the background—to re-forge NYPD detective Sara Pezzini’s mythos for a new generation. There was a lot of press hype around promises of a mash-up of “True Detective meets Berserk by way of Zodiac,” which translates to moody crime noir sprinkled with monster entrails—yum! I could definitely feel it when I read it, so this tracks.

Witchblade has had a mid-run "relaunch" before, which you can check out here.

Without spilling the grisly goodies, issue #1 finds Sara stalking a subterranean criminal cabal when a sentient gauntlet swipes right on her destiny. Bennett herself calls the saga “sleek, vicious, ferocious,” and after one read I’m convinced she’s underselling it like a vampire at a garlic festival.

Even comic-shop newcomers can jump aboard— Some have praised the debut for teaching Witchblade 101 while staying exciting, and retailers reported the heat—more than 80,000 initial orders, came in for Withcblade. Top Cow’s biggest blast in a decade, with reorders still piling up.

Variant-hunters get a coven’s worth of choices, from Silvestri’s classic swagger to sizzling J. Scott Campbell and Bill Sienkiewicz covers. Image even dropped a slick teaser trailer to stoke the hype cauldron—because who doesn’t love a little moving-picture foreplay with their comics?

So quit lurking in the shadows and snatch your copy before the Witchblade claws its way off the shelf and into someone else’s collection.
